County's firefighting project awarded $893,250 in federal funds

Chelan County will receive $893,250 in federal funds for a one-of-a-kind firefighting project that will place large water storage tanks around some of Chelan County’s most wildfire-prone areas.
The funding comes at the support of Congresswoman Kim Schrier, who announced on March 13 that 14 of her Community Project Funding requests were included in a funding bill passed recently by President Biden.
“We thank Rep. Schrier for recognizing the importance of this unique project to Chelan County, one of the most wildfire-prone counties in the state,” said Commissioner Shon Smith, who represents the northern part of Chelan County. “From the start, Rep. Schrier and her staff have understood and backed our vision for this project. Her office has also taken the time to meet with us on site and talk over project details. We truly are grateful for Rep. Schrier’s advocacy and her support.”
Chelan County plans to repurpose shipping containers into mobile water storage tanks, or fire tender refill stations. The tanks would store about 21,000 gallons of water and be placed above ground or below. They will be placed in areas that don’t have fire hydrants available, to be refilled via a nearby well or by tender trucks after an emergency.
The total cost of the project is expected to be just under $1.2 million for an initial 12 water tanks. The location of those sites has not been finalized. Chelan PUD has also committed up to $50,000 toward the project.
“These federal dollars will allow us to get to work, placing these tanks in our fire-prone areas,” Smith said. “The water tanks will allow us to get water on a wildfire faster. They will improve safety for our firefighters. And, it is our hope, the tanks will help lower home insurance rates. We are confident this project will be emulated around the state.”
Community Project Funding allows members of Congress to advocate on behalf of their constituents by identifying local projects in need of federal funding. Also awarded money was the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, which will receive $660,000 for body cameras.
