Chelan County Regional Justice Center is accepting applications to create a hiring list to fill immediate openings for Corrections Deputies.

Summary

This position is general corrections work involving the care, maintenance, order and security in a correctional facility for staff and persons incarcerated.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Booking new arrests and/or commitments/Releasing persons incarcerated from custody.
  • Adults in custody and facility/cell searches.
  • Daily facility routines, to include feeding, linen exchange, adults in custody visits, commissary delivery, and special adults in custody programs.
  • Adults in custody transports outside the facility.
  • Supervising/monitoring facility adult workers in custody.
  • Accurate computer data entry.
  • Maintaining security, order, and discipline of adults in custody at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from a standard high school or possess GED certificate.
  • Ability to read and write the English language.
  • Possess a current Washington State Driver’s license.
  • Must have basic typing/keyboard skills.
  • United States citizen, not less than 20 years of age.
  • Must have NO felony convictions.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background investigation, additional interviews, physical and drug testing, and polygraph examinations.

Candidates 19 years of age may apply to take this examination, but must be 20 years of age before hire date. A successful candidate will have delayed eligibility until the required minimum age is attained.

  • Ability to pass entrance examination successfully with a combined score of 70% or higher, including physical ability standards.
  • Once employed, the applicant must successfully complete the Basic Corrections Academy and successfully pass the Academy Basic Correction’s physical ability admittance test, and the applicant must meet all required certifications and maintain all other standards necessary for the performance of their job duties.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • County ordinances and applicable State and Federal laws.
  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC).
  • Departmental policies and procedures.
  • Laws of arrest, search and seizure, including legal ramification of action taken.
  • Identification and preservation of evidence.
  • Supervision and management of adults in custody.
  • Adults in custody constitutional rights/protections.

Skill in:

  • Handling adults in custody by maintaining authority and utilizing physical force as necessary.
  • Use and care of firearms.
  • Operation of police vehicles and other police equipment.
  • Interacting with the public courteously, firmly and effectively.
  • Interpersonal communication skills with persons incarcerated.
  • Analyzing dangerous situations rapidly and accurately.
  • Maintaining control in stressful, hostile and hazardous situations.
  • Basic typing/keyboard skills.
  • First Aid principles and application.

Ability to:

  • Ensure the security, comfort and concern of adults in custody.
  • Share workload with other officers to solidify the teamwork concept.
  • Act without direct supervision and exercise independent discretion.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Cope with situations firmly, courteously and tactfully, with respect for the rights of others.
  • Accurately hear all radio transmissions, alarms, etc.
  • Proficiently operate all facility equipment (radios, computers, etc.)
  • Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Exercise good judgment in decision making.
  • Relate positively with other employees and adults in custody, and to resolve conflicts when they arise.
  • Perform duties under stress.
  • Work in a confined area for long periods of time.
  • Qualify in firearms and defensive tactics.
  • Recognize medical and psychological warning signs.

Education and/or Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED

Physical Demands & Work Environment

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to work in a detention/correctional setting and use standard office equipment and law enforcement devices and weapons, is occasionally required to drive a motor vehicle, run after and apprehend inmates, sustain dominance over unruly individuals, and lift and/or move up to and over 100 pounds. The employee is regularly exposed to hazardous situations which involve physically violent persons, mentally or emotionally disturbed persons, persons with infectious diseases, highly stressful situations, is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat or cold, toxic or caustic chemicals, and is frequently required to work evening, night, weekend or holiday shifts.

Additional Information

Public Safety Testing (PST) is required; There is a written and physical ability test. Must sign up with Public Safety Testing at www.publicsafetytesting.com - Scores are to be sent to Chelan County Regional Justice Center

  • Lateral Corrections: Applicants for Lateral Correction Deputy must have been employed continuously for 24 months as a full-time employee in a comparable position within the last two years; have successfully completed the agencies required probationary period and have successfully completed the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Basic Corrections Academy or equivalent certification. The equivalent certification must be acceptable to the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission and the Director of the Chelan County Regional Justice Center. Applicants must be able to successfully pass a background investigation, additional interviews, physical, and any other required examinations.
