Description

Ohme Gardens is a unique evergreen oasis in the heart of Washington State. With a mile of natural stone pathways that wander through the hillside gardens, towering cedars and firs, lush foliage, mesmerizing waterfalls and tranquil pools, Ohme Gardens is a one-of-a-kind, world renowned attraction. The Gardens were started by Herman & Ruth Ohme in 1929 as a private family retreat.  At the urging of friends and the community they opened the Gardens to the public in 1939. The Gardens are now owned and operated by Chelan County. As stewards of this regional treasure, it is the County's goal to maintain, preserve and improve the Gardens for generations to come.

SUMMARY

The Garden Director is the public face of Ohme Gardens, providing leadership and directing all functions of the Gardens. This position focuses on the big picture, with an emphasis on fundraising and the marketing of Ohme Gardens to sustain the park and meet strategic goals to move the Gardens to the next level.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Direct development and implementation of the Gardens' goals and objectives.

  2. Create and implement fundraising programs including increasing donations, giving plans, fundraiser events, and capital campaigns.

  3. Prepare long and short-range plans for the Gardens and facilities on the property.

  4. Forecast annual operating budget and figures, and monitor expenses to ensure compliance.

  5. Search out additional funding sources, including grant opportunities.

  6. Develop programs to increase attendance.

  7. Market Ohme Gardens and increase publicity through all forms of communications, including online, social media, print, etc.

  8. Develop community relationships. Network with the community and travel industries to further the Gardens as a tourist destination.

  9. Attend community meetings to network, including Cascade Loop, Garden Conservancy Northwest Network, and others.

  10. Research, coordinate and approve the ordering and purchasing of operating equipment and supplies, office equipment and supplies and items for resale in the gift shop.

  11. Enforce and implement County and Ohme Gardens policies and procedures.

  12. Develop, review and enforce contracts for events and weddings, booking events.

  13. Meet with venue contractors/responsible parties for event/wedding planning.

  14. Oversee maintenance and operations activities. May assist with or cover maintenance and operations as needed.

  15. Other duties as required for the operation of the Gardens.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position trains and supervises seasonal full-time employees including maintenance, event set-up and office staff, as well as inmate workers.  Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, planning, designing and directing work, evaluation of performance, and disciplinary action. Analyzes and resolves work problems and/or assists team in solving problems.

LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Also, ability to read, write and interpret contracts.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in Property/Garden Management, Business Management, Marketing or similar field and 5-8 years of experience in management, marketing and fundraising or related filed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential functions of the position.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must be able to successfully complete training through the Chelan County Regional Justice Center to qualify to supervise inmate workers. Valid Washington State driver’s license, and Washington State pesticide license ("Public Operators License").

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must have the ability to work in hot and cool weather and under sometimes strenuous conditions. Must have the ability to traverse up to a 200 foot elevation over uneven stone paths. Must be able to walk, stoop, bend, kneel and crouch, use hands to finger, handle, feel and reach in order to operate equipment. Must be able to speak and hear.  May occasionally be required to lift and/or move 25 pounds. Must have clear vision and be able to identify and distinguish colors in garden areas.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, traverse steep terrain, lift, carry, and talk or hear.  Work may be performed outdoors in hot and cool weather environment.  Administrative work is performed in an office environment.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when using some equipment, depending on the machinery being operated.  This position requires frequent local travel to industry meetings.
