Description

The Chelan County Public Works Department seeks applicants for a temporary flagger/laborer for the Wenatchee and Leavenworth Districts. The duties include all phases of traffic control, flagging, piloting, or buffering for equipment as directed. Assisting in manual labor as required when not flagging or working on other duties as assigned. The temporary position will be up to six months out of the year.

This position requires a Washington State Driver License and Flagging Certificate. Candidates must be at least eighteen years old. The salary range is $26.08 per hour up to $27.30 per hour with overtime paid at 1½ times the hourly rate. Starting salary dependent on qualifications and experience.

SUMMARY

Duties will include all phases of traffic control, flagging, piloting or buffering for equipment as directed. Assisting in manual labor as required when not flagging or other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Driving small trucks to destinations in a safe and lawful manner.               

Maintaining telephone or radio contact with supervisor to receive instructions.               

Securing signing loads as required during transit.               

Discussing traffic routing plans and type and location of control points with superior.

Distributing traffic control signs and markers along site in designated pattern.

Directing movement of traffic through site, using sign, hand, and flag signals.

Warning construction workers when approaching vehicle fails to heed signals to prevent accident and injury to workers.

Digging holes.               

Performing manual labor involving shoveling and or other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be 18 years of age and in good physical condition with a current flagger’s card or ability to obtain one. First Aid/CPR Card must be at least 18 years old and have the ability to identify hazards and reduce exposure within reasonable limits. Follow directions either by written, oral, or diagramed. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

A valid Washington State driver license; Flagger Card; and current First Aid/CPR/AED card.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Day to day duties shall include, but not be limited to patching; ditching; painting; cleaning and replacing culverts, sign replacement; installing fences and curbs; installing guardrails and guide posts; placing rip-rap on bridges, river and stream banks; miscellaneous carpentry; repairing or replacing sidewalks and handrail; providing traffic control; and other highway construction and maintenance activities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee generally works out doors and is exposed to extremes of weather and temperature, traffic hazards, dust, dirt, and noise. May be required regularly to lift 50 lbs. and occasionally up to 100 lbs. or more.
