25C07973 - Aasgard Injured Hiker SAR

Sheriff Mike Morrison reports on August 11th, 2025 at approximately 6:12 pm RiverCom Dispatch received a text-to-911 call from an unknown caller at Colchcuck Lake.  The caller reported hearing someone yelling for help on Aasgard Pass.  The caller said they were on the opposite side of the lake from Aasgard Pass.  Attempts were made to obtain more information from the caller but nothing further was reported other than continued yelling until about 7:00 pm.  The caller sent another text stating they believed there was an ankle injury.

Chelan County Mountain Rescue Volunteers were called to deploy on the trail to investigate further.  At approximately 8:00pm it was reported the hiker was somewhere on the southern edge of Aasgard pass near the cliffs of Dragontail Peak, still a large search area.  It was also reported he had a possible broken or sprained ankle, wrist, and tailbone.  Due to the location, a hoist capable helicopter was requested and US Army Air Ambulance Detachment Yakima (Yakima Dustoff) accepted the mission.

Yakima Dustoff responded to the Leavenworth Fish Hatchery and picked up 2 Chelan County Mountain Rescuer volunteers.  At approximately 11:00 pm, the rescuers were deployed to the top of Aasgard Pass.  They searched their way down and located the injured hiker, a 21 year-old from SeaTac about 900 vertical feet up from Colchuck Lake.  He was at the base of Dragontail Peak.  Rescuers found he had an injured ankle that he was unable to put weight on.  Yakima Dustoff did not attempt the hoist rescue at night time in close proximity to the cliffs.  The patient was stable and an attempt could be made during daylight.

The 2 CCMR rescuers stayed with the patient overnight and provided communication to CCSO Search and Rescue Coordinators.  In the morning, Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team accepted the mission to attempt the hoist.  Two more CCMR rescuers went in on the trail to hike out with the patient’s hiking partner and 4 CCMR rescuers remained on standby at the Leavenworth Fish Hatchery in case more personnel were needed to move the patient to a better hoist location.
Snohomish HRT was able to conduct the hoist mission during the daylight and brought the patient to the fish hatchery at approximately 9:20 am where he refused medical treatment.

The climber had attempted to ascend Aasgard Pass in the wrong area.  The common route is along the north edge of the pass.  Chelan County Sheriff’s Office recommends researching hiking routes thoroughly and being equipped with navigation aids while hiking.  Aasgard pass isa difficult, dangerous climb and a through hike of the Enchantments should only be attempted by experienced hikers.

CCSO thanks US Army Yakima Dustoff, Snohomish County HRT, and Chelan County Mountain Rescue for the safe outcome of this rescue.
