Chelan County declares state of emergency following flooding, wind storm

(Photo was taken from the west side of Stine Hill Road on Dec. 11.)

In response to the recent rain and windstorms that caused damage across the county on Dec. 10, a state of emergency has been declared in Chelan County.

The emergency declaration was approved on Dec. 10 by Commissioner Shon Smith, chairman of the Board of County Commissioners. County policy allows for one of the three commissioners of Chelan County to declare a state of emergency exists after consulting with public safety officers or Chelan County Emergency Management. The entire board will sign the formal resolution on Dec. 15 at its regularly scheduled meeting.

The emergency declaration affords commissioners the ability to use local resources without going through the typical government bidding process for goods and services. It is also generally a prerequisite for most state and federal recovery assistance funding.

The storm, which hit from Dec. 10-11, produced heavy rains, flooding, mudslides and tree falls within the county, with the Wenatchee River and its tributaries reaching record flows.
