Chelan County, partners plan prescribed burn this week

The Upper Wheeler X-Bound Rx Burn is planned for April 14-16, weather permitting.

The burn unit is about 35 acres and will occur on Chelan County and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife lands near the Upper Wheeler Reservoir in the Stemilt Basin, about 12 miles south of Wenatchee.

The prescribed burn is expected to take one day to complete ignitions, and crews will continue mop-up and patrol for several weeks. The public may see some smoke near the Upper Wheeler Reservoir.

People can check on the status of this burn and other planned prescribed burns on the Central Washington Initiative Smoke Pilot interactive map.

The goal of the prescribed burn is to reduce fuel loading and restore forest health and wildfire resilience to a portion of the local landscape that is highly valued for water resources, wildlife habitat and recreation. It is a collaborative effort among Chelan County Natural Resources, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Wenatchee Valley Fire Department.
