Horse Lake, Burch Mountain roads to close July 2-9

The Board of County Commissioners recently passed a resolution closing the dirt portions of Horse Lake and Burch Mountain roads on July 2-9.

The roads are being closed over the Fourth of July holiday because of unseasonably warm temperatures along with drought conditions and concerns of illegal fireworks being set off in the areas. The closures were requested by the Chelan County fire marshal and the Wenatchee Valley Fire Department.

The Horse Lake Reserve, accessible via Horse Lake Road, also will be closed during this time.

In 2024, a wildfire started when someone ignited fireworks in the Horse Lake Reserve. The fire burned 250 acres and caused evacuations in the Wenatchee area. Charges are pending, according to the Chelan County Sheriff's Office.

Fireworks are banned across Chelan County, by both the County and all the cities. In Chelan County, illegal fireworks can bring up to a $1,000 fine and up to 90 days in jail.

When someone ignites a wildfire, regardless of whether it was arson or an accident, local fire districts and state and federal agencies are allowed to pursue reimbursement for manpower and resources used. If you damage private or public property, you are responsible for any losses.
