Make a Difference Day returns Oct. 25 to Ohme Gardens

Every October, when Make a Difference Day rolls around, we send a call out to volunteers who want to mark the national day of service at Ohme Gardens.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, Ohme Gardens will team up with the Wenatchee Valley Fire Department, Cascadia Conservation District and area volunteers to clear underbrush, chip slash piles and reduce fuels around the western edge of the historic garden.

The important work strengthens our defensible space and helps to reduce wildfire risk to the alpine garden. (If you join us, you will learn land management techniques you can use on your property to protect your home.)

In the overflow parking lot, we also will have a biokiln workshop. Volunteers can learn how this eco-friendly, flame-cap kiln turns garden debris into biochar with minimal smoke.

Saturday will be a day that blends hands-on stewardship with practical learning!

The day starts at 8 a.m. at the gardens, 3327 Ohme Road in Wenatchee. Bring gloves, sturdy shoes and a willingness to get dirty! We’ll provide the tools and training.

No need to call ahead if you plan on joining us Saturday – just come on up! But if you are bringing a group, please email the garden director to give her a heads-up.

Make a Difference Day is a national day of service held annually on the fourth Saturday of October to encourage community volunteering and acts of kindness. As a reminder, Ohme Gardens is closed for the season and will reopen in April.
