Memorial service planned for Oct. 7 for K9 Kait

On Oct. 7, the Chelan County Regional Justice Center will host a memorial service for its narcotics-detecting canine.

K9 Kait passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 22. She was being treated for chronic hepatitis of the liver. A 7-year-old border collie, Kait served the Chelan County jail for two years. She previously served two years at the Tulalip Tribal Police Department.

"We will never be able to quantify how many lives Deputy Jacob Lewis and his K9 partner Kait saved," said Chris Sharp, director of the Regional Justice Center.  "Kait was an absolute home run in our drug interdiction program. She will be forever missed."

The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, at Wenatchee First Assembly Church, 1520 McKittrick St. Because Kait died during active duty, the service will include an Honor Guard as well as speakers and other K9 handlers and their dogs. The public is invited to the event.

“In her time with Chelan County, Kait not only helped build our drug interdiction program but she also became an ambassador for our jail,” said Corrections Deputy Jacob Lewis, Kait’s handler. “She was a friendly, loving face that our community supported and embraced. I miss my partner, and I know the community wants the opportunity to say good bye to Kait as well.”
