Warning: Email scam targets Public Works customers

Chelan County Public Works is alerting the public to an email scam reported by two local residents.

Recently, people applying to the county for an event permit (these are filled out when a community event may impact a county road) were emailed invoices for nearly $5,000. The scam included information about the applicants and the Public Works logo.

Public Works reminds its customers that it will never send you an invoice via email.

Event permit fees are paid for at the time of application, either in person at the Public Works’ counter or the applicant can Public Works directly and make payment over the phone. They cost $250.

This is the second similar scam this year that targeted people with business at the county, including a scam claiming to be an invoice from Chelan County Community Development. The scammers appear to be using public records to target people paying for permits.

People who suspect a fraudulent email should look for telling signs of phishing scams, including misspellings, suspicious email addresses and links, and requests for payments via wire transfers. People are also reminded to never share personal or financial information via email.

To report an email scam, people should contact the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.

If you receive an email from a county department and are suspicious of its contents or nature, call the department directly. Department contact numbers are on our website.
