$100 recording fee increase effective Jan. 1

Effective Jan. 1, the fee to record most documents in Washington will increase by $100 effective. The first-page recording fee for most documents will be $303.50.

This increase comes at the direction of HB 1474, passed by the 2023 Legislature, and funds a covenant homeownership program that seeks to increase the low homeownership rates among groups whose families may have once been denied home ownership due to a presence of racially restrictive property covenants.

Certain documents types are exempt from this increase. They are:

  • Assignment of Deed of Trust
  • Appointment, Substitution or Resignation of Trustee
  • Recorded marriage, birth and death records
  • Name change
  • Liens and releases recorded by state, city, county or a water/sewer district
  • Federal tax liens and releases
