Chelan County to conduct burn week of April 15 in Leavenworth

UPDATE (POSTED APRIL 17):

The permitted burn ended at 4:30 p.m. today. Crews will monitor the fire site into the evening. Thank you to our neighbors in the area of the brush drop-off site for their patience while the green material was burned.

UPDATE (POSTED APRIL 16):

Due to the large amount of green material collected at the Leavenworth brush drop-off site, a Chelan County Public Works crew was not able to complete in one day the burning of the brush pile at the site. So on Wednesday, April 17, the crew will continue burning the brush pile that was collected from the unincorporated area of Chelan County's Apple Maggot Quarantine Area.

The burn is permitted by the Washington State Department of Ecology. CCPW reports that work went well on Tuesday and about half the pile was able to be burned. The crew planned to stop burning material at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Crews will man the fire into the evening and then begin work again at 9 a.m. on April 17.

The permitted burn is on county-owned property at the intersection of East Leavenworth and Icicle roads in Leavenworth.

UPDATE (POSTED APRIL 15):

Chelan County Public Works plans to conduct a permitted burn at its Leavenworth brush drop-off site on Tuesday, April 16.

The burn is highly dependent on the weather and Ecology’s permit requirements. At this time, CCPW is planning on the Tuesday date to burn at the site, located at the intersection of East Leavenworth and Icicle roads.

PREVIOUSLY (POSTED APRIL 11):

LEAVENWORTH – Chelan County Public Works will be conducting a permitted burn at its county-owned property at the intersection of East Leavenworth and Icicle roads.

The burn is permitted by the Washington State Department of Ecology. The material to be burned is green waste collected at the county’s Leavenworth brush drop-off site that was dropped off by residents living in the unincorporated area of Chelan County’s Apple Maggot Quarantine Area.

The county crew will be monitoring the weather, including any air stagnation warnings, and onsite ground conditions to determine the optimal time window for the burn. At this time, crews are hoping to complete the work during the week of April 15. However, plans are highly weather dependent.

Once a burn date is confirmed, a public service announcement will be issued by the county to notify the public 24 hours before ignition. The announcement will be sent out on the solid waste Listserv and to local media outlets. It also will be posted to:

This is the second attempt since the fall to burn the material at the Leavenworth site. The burn, originally scheduled for last October, was postponed because weather and air conditions were not suitable for the burning of the brush. Properties around the Leavenworth site, as well as the City of Leavenworth and the local fire district, have been notified of the upcoming burn.

State law prohibits brush from a quarantine area to leave a quarantine area. The Leavenworth site was opened in 2017 to accommodate those citizens and businesses living and working in the quarantine area of Chelan County, which includes much of the Leavenworth, Plain and Lake Wenatchee areas. The Leavenworth brush drop-off site is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays.
