ORIGINAL POST: Chumstick Highway Phase V, the road improvement project between Plain and Leavenworth, begins Monday, Aug. 7.
A contractor for the county will be working between milepost 5.15 to milepost 6.60 (starting at the end of the previous phase constructed in 2014 and ending just north of the Chumstick Bridge No. 4, or about 7 miles south of Plain).
The first week of construction, watch for the contractor to be mobilizing equipment in the project area, installing construction and traffic signage, removing trees and guardrail sections, and installing drainage structures. Construction updates will be posted to the Chelan County Public Works Facebook page.
The Chumstick project will take 25 working days. During construction, the road will be at one lane, with flaggers directing traffic. A pilot car also will lead motorists through the work area. Plan for traffic delays of up to 20 minutes, or avoid the area if you can.
The contractor typically will be working Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., the roadway will be open to two lanes; however, it will be graveled. The roadway will be open to two lanes on weekends as well. Visit the project's webpage for more details.
Motorists are advised that two other road projects will be occurring in the Leavenworth area during Chumstick Highway Phase V construction:
On Aug. 7, Link Transit begins construction on a roundabout at the intersection of Icicle Road and Highway 2. That work will require traffic control to be in place 24/7 during the work week. Sometimes that will be flagger-controlled traffic and sometimes it will be a portable signal, depending on the construction phase. Typically, the intersection will reopen to two-way traffic Fridays through Sundays. The project is scheduled to wrap up at the end of September.
A contractor for WSDOT is replacing guardrail in the Tumwater Canyon. The work schedule is 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Plan for automatic flagger assistance device-controlled traffic with delays for up to 20 minutes. Work is scheduled to wrap up Oct. 6.
