Consider helping Ohme Gardens with wildfire protection this Make a Difference Day

Ohme Gardens is asking anyone interested in giving back to the community this Make a Difference Day to consider joining its efforts on Oct. 28 to make the gardens less prone to wildfire destruction.

Community volunteers are needed to help staff re-establish the wildfire defensible space around the gardens, more specifically at the west end of the property. Volunteers will be helping haul and split wood as well as spread mulch.

It would be wonderful if about 30 volunteers could help join in the effort, which will be 8 a.m. to noon, said Ohme Gardens Director Samantha Segaline.

“We had about 15 community volunteers join us last year on Make a Difference Day,” Segaline said. “This year, we hope to have two crews working together. If you can’t make it for the full four hours, consider joining us for a couple of hours. The best part is you’ll be working outside.”

If you would like to join in the effort at Ohme Gardens, meet at 8 a.m. at the gardens’ entrance. People should wear sturdy footwear, long pants and shirts will full sleeves. People should also consider bringing their own vision and hearing protection and gloves.

“Ohme Gardens is in a precarious position should we have a wildfire in the area,” Segaline said. “If we can get this defensible space re-established and widened, that would be a big weight lifted off staff come fire season next year.”

Held annually across the nation, Make a Difference Day is the fourth Saturday of October. It is a day of service dedicated to helping out in local communities. The Wenatchee Valley Make a Difference Day includes a variety of projects for people to give their time, resources and skills.
