Construction starts on West Malaga Road project

UPDATE: POSTED 5/14/2020

On May 18-19, a Chelan County contractor will be paving a portion of the roadway as part of the West Malaga Road Intersections Project.

Traffic on West Malaga Road should expect up to 20-minute delays. However, traffic utilizing the roadway’s McEldowney and Golf Course roads intersections could see longer delays (up to 30 minutes) to prevent damage to pavement until it cools and stiffens. Motorists should plan for one-lane, flagger-controlled traffic in the project area. Or, motorists should avoid the project area those two days, if possible.

Paving is expected to be completed on May 19, weather permitting. After paving, the contractor will complete minor work, including road striping, for the remainder of the week. The project is expected to be finished before the Memorial Day weekend.

UPDATE: POSTED 4/21/2020

Starting April 20, construction resumed on the project, which is still slated to be completed by Memorial Day. Traffic restrictions and safety measures are in place.

UPDATE: POSTED 4/1/2020

Starting April 2, construction on the West Malaga Intersections Project will be suspended.

The project is suspended because it is uncertain, at this time, if the road-building materials needed to move forward, as well as the subcontractors required, are available. The existing roadway cannot be removed until the contractor is sure paving crews and materials will be available.

At this time, the contractor has completed all work required that is off the roadway. About 25 percent of the project is complete.

There is no estimated time of startup because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Chelan County Public Works will notify the public when construction resumes on the project.

POSTED 3/19/2020

Construction begins March 23 on the West Malaga Intersections Project.

The project, which will improve the intersections of West Malaga Road with McEldowney and Golf Course roads, will take about 35 working days.

The contractor on the project is Smith Excavation of Cashmere. Crews typically will be working 10-hour shifts during the week, starting at 7 a.m.

The speed limit in the work area will be lowered to 25 mph for the duration of the project. During the day, traffic in the project area also will be reduced to one lane, with flaggers directing traffic. Motorists should plan for minor traffic delays, or plan to avoid the area if they can.

Property owners in the project area are reminded that during construction they will have access to their driveways and services such as mail and garbage will continue as scheduled. They are asked to remove any vehicles, including boats, RVs, trailers or any building materials, from the county right-of-way.

The primary goal of the West Malaga Intersections Project is to improve the turning radius from McEldowney Road onto West Malaga Road to alleviate conflicts due to the turning radius needed for large commercial trucks. The project also will improve the sight distance along the roadway, install guardrail and widen the road for a future turn lane proposed at Golf Course Road.

The overall project will cost $650,000, the majority of which is being paid for with a federal grant.

If you have questions on the construction and its impacts, contact Chelan County Public Works public information officer Jill FitzSimmons at jill.fitzsimmons@co.chelan.wa.us or 667-6415.
