Cooling centers welcome people out of heatwave

The Pacific Northwest is experiencing a heatwave, with the National Weather Service forecasting temperatures of up to 110 degrees June 26-27 in Chelan County and record-breaking temperatures into the Fourth of July holiday.

Cooling centers, or air-conditioned places where the public can visit to cool off, are available to people who don’t have air conditioning in their homes. In Wenatchee, the Town Toyota Center, 1300 Walla Walla Ave., is serving as a cooling center. It will be open 24 hours a day beginning at noon on Saturday, June 26.

Also open as cooling centers are the Wenatchee Library, 310 Douglas St., and the East Wenatchee Library, 271 9th St. NE. A list of libraries in the NCW Libraries district and their operating hours are available online.

Additional locations of cooling centers will be posted to the health district's Facebook page.

The health district reminds people that heat-related illnesses such as heat strokes, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, sunburn and heat rashes are preventable. Seek medical attention if you are experiencing severe symptoms such as high body temperature, heavy sweating, fainting, dizziness, nausea, headaches or muscle cramps.

In addition, follow these steps to avoid heat-related accidents and illnesses:

  • Consider cancelling outdoor activities during the heat of the day, or 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Never leave children or pets in a vehicle.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, but avoid beverages that contain alcohol, caffeine or a lot of sugar.
  • If possible, use air conditioning units or remain in a cool place.
