County continues hearing on proposed fee increases

A July 9 hearing on new proposed fee schedule for the Community Development and Fire Prevention and Investigation departments has been continued to 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

At the recent hearing, county staff gave an overview of how the proposed increases in fees were calculated based on the number of building and planning permits from the last four years as well as costs such as administrative supplies, services, salaries and charges. Staff presented an analysis of the true cost for services as well as a fee comparison with six other jurisdictions.

Their research shows current fees have not kept pace with increases in labor costs and annual Consumer Price Index increases and do not follow a cost-recovery model.

The county has not raised building and planning fees since 2018. Community Development is asking the Board of County Commissioners to approve the increases in planning and fire safety fees later this summer. Increases in building fees will be proposed next year in an effort to roll out the increases on users rather than pass them all at once. In the future, fee updates also will be performed annually on Feb. 1.

The staff report, proposed resolution and Exhibit B have been modified. Read the proposed resolution and supporting documents online
