County commissioners signed a proclamation, declaring Dec. 15, 2023, be recognized as Volleyball State Champions Day in Chelan County.

The proclamation honors the Manson, Chelan and Wenatchee high school volleyball teams, each of which earned the title of state champion in their divisions in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA):

  • Manson Trojans are the 2023 2B WIAA State Volleyball Champion
  • Chelan Goats are the 2023 1A State Volleyball Champions
  • Wenatchee Panthers are the 2023 4A State Volleyball Champions

The volleyball teams brought home three of the six division titles recognized by the WIAA. At no time in Chelan County’s known history have three separate high schools been named state champions in one sport, making Chelan County in 2023 the epicenter of state volleyball champions, the proclamation reads.

The proclamation was read aloud on Dec. 12 in the commissioners chambers before coaches and players from the Manson and Wenatchee teams. The Chelan team was unable to attend; commissioners will travel to Chelan High School on Dec. 15 to recognize the team.

“As local leaders, we’re elected to be in these positions and this is brought on by our desire to try and improve our community,” Commissioner Shon Smith said to the audience. “When I look out across this crowd, I see a bunch of young ladies who are doing exactly the same thing on a different level. …I am very proud of all of you.”

Commissioners presented head coaches Jordan McGregor-Hansen of the Wenatchee Panthers and Hayli Thompson of the Manson Trojans team plaques that are engraved with the proclamation. In addition, each coach and player received a commemorative commissioners coin.

The coins, often called challenge coins, are typically given out to county employees with 30 years of service to the community or those employees who have gone above and beyond their duties. Commissioner Kevin Overbay explained that the tradition extends back to Roman times, when warriors were given a specially minted coin after a battle. The warriors often saved the coins as a memento of bravery or perseverance in battle, he explained.

“To be able to have three state champions in Chelan County in one sport is unheard of,” Overbay said to the teams. “I will tell you that I am so proud as not only a county member but as the father of two daughters who played sports. It is a very special place in my heart to be able to see you all here and for us to be able to recognize your achievements today.”

The proclamation also recognizes the players for inspiring young girls across Chelan County.

“You are leaders in your school and lots of young kids look up to you, including mine,” Commissioner Tiffany Gering said. “I want to say how incredible all of you are and really congratulate you for these achievements. And way to go to all of the female teams that are the first to do this in Chelan County history. That is a huge deal.”
