Do you live in a floodplain? Join us Aug. 29 for a community discussion

Chelan County Community Development invites anyone living in or around a floodplain or floodway to attend a community meeting on Aug. 29 at Lake Wenatchee to learn what activities can – and can’t – be conducted in flood-prone areas.

The meeting is 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, at the Lake Wenatchee Rec Club, 14400 Chiwawa Loop Road.

The meeting will focus on building codes that apply to properties in floodways and floodplains and how those codes impact development as well as flood insurance policies. Speakers will also cover activities such as clearing, grading and the installation of sheds and utilities as related to floodplains. Community Development staff, the county’s floodplain expert and Chelan County Code Enforcement will be available to answer questions from the public.

The meeting is being held at Lake Wenatchee because of recent questions that have come up from people living in that area; however, this is an issue that impacts people across Chelan County, especially those living in flood-prone areas, said Deanna Walter, Community Development director.

“Illegal buildings and structures built in floodplains impact the county’s overall flood insurance rating with FEMA, an issue that everyone should be concerned about because it trickles down to the homeowner through higher insurance premiums,” Walter said. “This meeting is an opportunity for us to engage with people, answer their questions and address the whys of floodplain regulations and codes.”

Flood maps will be available for people who attend. To determine if you live in a floodplain, go to the FEMA Flood Map Service Center.
