Dryden Transfer Station to close for most of April for repairs

The Dryden Transfer Station will be closed for most of April so a contractor can repair the concrete floor of the pit where garbage is collected and loaded, commonly called the “push pit.”

On Tuesday, Chelan County Commissioners awarded a $237,269 contract to SCI Industrial Services of Wenatchee for completion of the work.

The contractor is expected to begin work on April 1, with the facility re-opening on approximately April 23. The work requires a three-week closure of all areas of the transfer station to all commercial and residential customers. The closure also applies to the drop-off brush yard, recycling area and metal recycling yard at the facility.

The concrete work is routine maintenance at the transfer station, which is owned and operated by Chelan County. The dozer used in the pit shoves the garbage to one end, where it is loaded into trucks for transportation to the Douglas County landfill in East Wenatchee. The action of pushing the material, along with the irregularities in the makeup of the household garbage, eventually erodes the concrete and causes damage to the rails, requiring periodic repairs. Similar maintenance work on the push pit was completed in 2020.

The repair work includes removing all the loose and damaged concrete flooring and rebar and then replacing the steel track rails and pouring a new concrete surface. While the work will not take the full three weeks, time is needed to allow the new concrete to cure. During the closure, transfer station staff also will be completing general maintenance work at the facility, from doing small repairs to hanging new signage.

The work at the Dryden facility does not impact the Chelan Transfer Station. People who use the Dryden Transfer Station are encouraged to use the Wenatchee Transfer Station during the closure.

Keep up on the progress of the repair work on the Chelan County Public Works Facebook page.
