Dryden Transfer Station will not take yard waste from apple maggot quarantine area

The Dryden Transfer Station will no longer accept plant material -- tree limbs and clippings, brush, grass, homegrown tree fruit, etc. -- from apple maggot quarantine areas, which includes much of western Chelan County.

The Dryden Transfer Station is located in a pest-free area; however, much of western Chelan County, including Leavenworth, Plain and Lake Wenatchee, is located in an apple maggot quarantine area. The apple maggot is a pest that threatens Washington’s apple industry, as well as many of our other fruit crops. State law prohibits plant material from leaving apple maggot quarantine areas.

Businesses and residents are responsible for knowing where the quarantine boundaries are so they do not transport plant waste from a quarantine area to a pest-free area. The Washington State Department of Agriculture’s website also has a searchable map to determine if a specific address is inside or outside the apple maggot quarantine area.

If a business or person is found to have transported quarantine material to a transfer station that’s in a pest-free area, then the business or person can be held financially responsible for the destruction of the material and/or its transportation back to the quarantine area (RCW 17.24.091). Violators way be charged with a gross misdemeanor (RCW 17.24.100).
