Fly on over to Cashmere-Dryden Airport Day on Sept. 7

The Cashmere-Dryden Airport will welcome visitors to the municipal airport on Sept. 7 for its annual celebration of aviation and its role in a rural community.

Cashmere-Dryden Airport Day is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the airport, 5500 Sullivan St. in Cashmere.

The one-day event is held annually on the same weekend as the Chelan County Fair to draw visitors already headed to Cashmere. Between 300 and 400 people attend a year.

Now in its third year, the celebration offers free activities for all ages. About 30 single-engine airplanes will be on display, along with antique cars and a couple of helicopters. There will be activities and food trucks and snacks for purchase, and a shuttle will transport people around the airport, which will be closed for the day.

New this year, the event also will include large-scale RC aircraft demonstrations throughout the day. The remote-controlled aircraft are about 6 feet long with up to a 10-foot wingspan and will be flown over the airport. Wenatchee Red Apple Fliers is leading the demonstration.

“It’s going to be a fun day for the whole community, in particular youth and people who have a deep connection to aviation,” said York Baur, a board member with the Cashmere-Dryden Airport. “We encourage everyone to come on out to see the airplanes and ask questions.”

Opened in 1950, the municipal airport in Cashmere accommodates primarily small single-engine aircraft and helicopters. It is home to nearly 40 based aircraft. It is the only airport owned by Chelan County, averaging 3,075 operations a year.

Baur stressed that Cashmere-Dryden Airport Day is also a time to remind the public of the role rural airports play in a community. Throughout the year, the airport provides support for wildfires, medical emergencies, medical support flights, law enforcement, and search and rescue operations. Most recently, two U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopters used the airport to refuel as part of a fire suppression mission.

The Cashmere-Dryden Airport also plays a key role in flight training for local pilots looking to get their hours in to earn their licenses or become professional pilots.

“This event is not only a fun day but also an opportunity for us to be good neighbors, to illuminate the community on their local municipal airport and the important role it plays in the county,” Baur said.
