Hazardous trees to come down on Chumstick Highway

Work begins Wednesday, Oct. 19, on hazardous tree removal along Chumstick Highway.

The project, expected to take about 20 days, will begin between Merry Canyon Road and milepost 10. The contractor is expected to be in that area through at least Friday, Oct. 21.

Work will take place 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Drivers should expect one-lane, flagger-controlled traffic in the area with up to 10-minute delays.

The overall project will cover about five miles, beginning at about milepost 8.7 and continuing to about milepost 13.6.

Altels Logging of Cashmere will be working to clear about 130 trees in the county right-of-way that are dead, dying or have serious structural defects. An arborist who identified the hazardous trees suspects the damage to the trees is related to drought, disease and beetle infestation. The work is part of a two-phase hazardous tree removal project along Chumstick Highway and the Beaver Valley Road corridor. The first phase was completed this summer.

“All of the trees identified for removal pose a safety threat to drivers traveling along Chumstick Highway,” said Jill FitzSimmons, public information officer with Chelan County Public Works.

The estimated cost of Phase II is $120,000. The county is paying for the project out of its county road fund.
