Icicle Creek Work Group to hold Feb. 26 open house

Photo: A contractor for the Cascade Orchard Irrigation Company lays irrigation pipe last summer on Shore Street in Leavenworth. The irrigation project will modernize the system from a gravity-flow to a closed-pressurized system. The project is on schedule to be completed by May 1 for the start of the 2025 irrigation season.

The Icicle Creek Work Group invites the public to an open house on Feb. 26 to learn about ongoing progress on a variety of projects in the Icicle Creek watershed.

The event is from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Chelan County Fire District No. 3 firehall, 228 Chumstick Highway. The event will follow an open house format, with a 30-minute presentation beginning at 6:30 p.m.

“The work group has taken on a number of new projects, especially in the past few years,” said Mary Jo Sanborn, senior program manager with Chelan County Natural Resources. “We’re eager to update the community on our progress and explain the long-term impacts these projects will have on the Icicle Creek watershed. We will also have news on what’s to come in the near future.”

Icicle Creek is a major tributary in the Wenatchee River. Its flows support a range of uses, from domestic water supply, agricultural irrigation and fish hatchery operations to fish habitat and recreation.

The Icicle Work Group, now 13 years old, works to find collaborative solutions to chronic water supply problems in the watershed that will enhance fish habitat and passage and improve agricultural reliability, domestic water supply and instream flows. The work group consists of members representing local, state and federal agencies; tribes; irrigation and agricultural interests; and environmental organizations.

Among those projects to be spotlighted on Feb. 26 are:

  • Cascade Orchard Irrigation Company Irrigation Improvements: The $9 million irrigation improvement project began last spring and is on schedule to be completed in May. When finished, it will upgrade a more than 100-year-old system while restoring instream flows to the creek.
  • Eightmile Lake Dam Rebuild: With the completion last year of the project’s Environmental Impact Statement, engineering and design have begun on the project. Construction of a wide spillway without gates was identified as the preferred alternative in the EIS.
  • Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery’s Surface Water Intake Fish Screens and Fish Passage (SWISP): This two-phased project will improve the aging infrastructure at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery. Phase I, which addressed fish passage and screening concerns and the reduction of hatchery impacts to Icicle Creek, was completed in December 2023. Phase II, projected to begin in spring 2026, will rehabilitate the surface water supply pipeline that serves the hatchery.
  • Icicle Creek Water Smart Gardens Program (WSGP): Launched in 2024, the WSGP will reimburse landowners $2 a square foot of lawn removed, with a maximum reimbursement amount of $3,000. Landowners interested in the program can learn how to submit an application containing the necessary information.
