The Peshastin Bridge, located off of Highway 2, will temporarily close for a month beginning June 17 so a county contractor can make some repairs to the bridge.
The temporary closure is expected to last until about July 12. No motorists will be able to use the bridge during the closure.
A detour route has been established via North Road, Chumstick Highway and Highway 2.
In addition, Link Transit will be operating a shuttle traveling on North Road between the turnaround in Peshastin to Wilkommen Park-and-Ride, behind Safeway. View the full shuttle schedule on the Link Transit website.
The temporary closure to the bridge is necessary so the contractor can work. The contractor will be working seven days a week to complete the project on time.
Closing the bridge allows construction to be completed in less than half the time it would take to do the work with a single-lane closure. The bridge is also too narrow for a one-lane closure; its narrow lanes, sidewalks and guardrails leave little work space for the construction crew and its large, specialized bridge construction equipment. In addition, a one-lane closure of the bridge would not allow trucks to turn safely off Highway 2 onto the bridge, creating congestion at the intersection.
The schedule of the closure was determined following a community meeting in October, when the public, including local growers and the Cascade School District, relayed they would prefer a mid-June closure instead of a late summer closure.
The project includes putting a new overlay on the bridge deck and replacing the bridge deck joints. The work will replace the top couple inches of the bridge’s driving surface; work does not include widening the driving lanes.
The Peshastin Bridge is among five bridges the county will improve this summer. Only the Peshastin Bridge requires the temporary closure.
