A road closure on South Wenatchee Avenue – just before the bridge between Boodry and Beuzer streets – will remain in place for the unforeseeable future while Chelan County Public Works, in coordination with the county’s Surface and Stormwater Management Utility, evaluates how best to address a large sinkhole in the roadway.
The sinkhole formed in late June following a period of heavy rains. The existing stormwater conveyance system under the collapsed roadway is deteriorated beyond repair. The road closure includes the bridge over Squilchuck Creek and about 100 feet of roadway.
The Surface and Stormwater Management Utility last year received a $755,000 grant from the state Department of Ecology to replace the stormwater pipe in this area. This project, which is under design, will not only improve stormwater conveyance along South Wenatchee Avenue where the sinkhole lies but also improve water quality flowing into Squilchuck Creek.
Public Works is currently working to determine if there is a short-term, viable fix for the sinkhole, or if there is a way of moving up the funding and construction schedule for the stormwater improvement project.
In the meantime, the area around the sinkhole is secured by a fence and a detour is in place. Marked detours around the road closure are available via Boodry Street and Beuzer Street, while access to those streets is still available from Malaga Alcoa Highway on either side of the closure.

Un cierre en el lado Sur de la Avenida Wenatchee – justo antes del puente entre las calles Boodry y Beuzer – permanecerá así durante el futuro próximo mientras Obras Públicas del Condado de Chelan, en colaboración con la Unidad del Control de Aguas Pluviales y de Superficie, evalúan cuál es la mejor manera para tratar de un sumidero en la calzada.
Se formó el sumidero a las finales de junio después de una lluvia torrencial. El sistema de desagüe existente colapsó la calzada que queda tan deterioada que no puede arreglarse. El cierre de la calzada incluye el puente que cruza el Arroyo Squilchuck y unos 100 pies de la calzada.
El año pasado la Unidad del Control de Aguas Pluviales y de Superficie recibió una subvención de $755,000 del Departamento estatal de Medio Ambiente para reemplazar el tubo de desagüe en esta zona. El proyecto, que está en desarrollo, no simplemente mejorará el desagüe de las aguas pluviales a lo largo del lado Sur de la Avenida Wenatchee donde yace el sumidero, pero también mejorará la calidad del agua que fluye al Arroyo Squilchuck.
En la actualidad, Obras Públicas está trabajando para determinar si hay una solución viable de corto plazo para arreglar el sumidero o si hay alguna forma para adelantar la programación de subvenciones y construcción para este proyecto de mejora de aguas pluviales.
Entre tanto, la zona alrededor del sumidero está vallada y hay un desvío en marcha. Se ven placas de desvío alrededor del cierre de calzada por las calles Boodry y Beuzer, mientras el acceso a esas calles están disponibles desde la Careterra Málaga Alcoa en ambos lados del cierre.
