Sandoval honored with state award for outstanding service to veterans

Tony Sandoval, manager of the Chelan County Veterans Service Office, was recently the recipient of the “2021 Outstanding Service to Veterans: Superior Award.”

Awarded on behalf of the Governor’s Veterans Advisory Committee and the Washington Department of Veterans Affairs, the honor is given for “empathy and unselfish fashion in which you serve the veterans community.”

“The award reflects Tony’s dedication to improving the quality of life of our veterans and their families in our community,” said Chelan County Commissioner Kevin Overbay. “Our veterans program has been transformed under Tony’s leadership.”

In his five years with the county, Sandoval has worked with more than 1,508 veterans and started or worked on more than 1,150 claims and appeals. The program typically sees 30 new veterans or families a month.

In 2020, the county program garnered $1.8 million in new claims for Chelan County’s local vets. This past year marked the second consecutive year Sandoval has hit $1.8 million.

“I want to be known as someone people can talk to,” Sandoval recently said.

Sandoval is one of two Veterans Service Officers at the Chelan County Veterans Service Office, 428 Orondo Ave. in Wenatchee. The job of a VSO is to link local veterans up with national, state and local resources, including VA healthcare, housing, education benefits, in-home health care, survivor benefits and insurance.
