This week, Feb. 20-26, is National Invasive Species Awareness Week, a time to highlight the threat posed by invasive species and raise awareness about the need to prevent their spread. Invasive species are plants, animals and microorganisms that are not native to an ecosystem and cause harm to the environment, economy or human health.

The Chelan County Noxious Weed Control Board is taking part in this important initiative by setting up a table at Pybus Public Market in Wenatchee from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, to educate the public about invasive species and why we should all be concerned about their impact on our natural resources.

Invasive species are a major threat to biodiversity and can cause significant damage to ecosystems by outcompeting native species, altering nutrient cycles and disrupting natural ecological processes. In addition, invasive species can have a negative impact on the economy by reducing crop yields, increasing the cost of control efforts and decreasing property values.

Invasive species are also a threat to human health. For example, some invasive species can carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans, pets, or livestock. Invasive plants can also cause allergies, skin irritation, and other health problems.

Preventing the introduction and spread of invasive species is crucial to protecting our natural resources and preserving the health of our communities. Some ways to prevent the spread of invasive species include cleaning equipment and vehicles that may have come into contact with invasive species, avoiding the release of non-native pets and plants into the wild, and supporting efforts to control invasive species in natural areas.
