Cooling centers welcome people out of heatwave

Cooling centers, or air-conditioned places where the public can visit to cool off, are available to people who don’t have air conditioning in their homes. In Wenatchee, the Town Toyota Center, 1300 Walla Walla Ave., is serving as a cooling center. It will be open during the ongoing heatwave for 24 hours a day beginning on Saturday, June 26.

Crunch Pak, one of the largest employers in Chelan County, recently contributed $150,000 to the construction of the new West Cashmere Bridge. Crunch Pak has been a proponent of the project, pledging its financial support as well as speaking to legislators about the importance of the project.

On March 9, the Boards of County Commissioners in Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan counties finalized an agreement combining the Okanogan County Horticultural Pest & Disease Board with the joint Chelan-Douglas Horticultural Pest & Disease Board. The new board is named the Tri-County Horticultural Pest & Disease Board.

A multi-year effort that brought together more than 100 people from organizations throughout Chelan County has resulted in a draft Climate Resiliency Strategy report that builds a foundation for future climate resilience and adaptation work. The community will have opportunities Dec. 2 and Dec. 3 to hear more details about the report and provide input.

Before the snow flies, Chelan County Public Works is cautioning the public that while the department’s snowplow operators will be hard at work this winter, impacts from COVID-19 may get in the way of snow and ice control at times. And if that happens, snowplowing efforts may be hindered.
