On September 6th, 2024 at approximately 7:28am, a climbing accident was reported on the Saber Route on Castlerock in the Tumwater Canyon outside of Leavenworth. The reporting party said the climber, a 43 year old female had fallen approximately 25 feet. He was reporting a head injury at the time.
Chelan County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, Cascade Medical Center paramedics, and Chelan County Fire District 3 personnel responded initially. Paramedics were the first to arrive with the patient. They requested a rope rescue team due to fall risk and personnel to conduct a litter rescue.
Wenatchee Valley Fire Rope Rescue were called and responded with 9 rescuers. A rope system was put into place at the scene to mitigate the fall risk and the patient was hand carried to the more managable trail. From there she was transported by wheeled litter to the trailhead. Cascade Medical transported her to Confluence in Wenatchee. The patient’s current condition is unknown, however she did sustain a significant head injury.
Search and rescue season has not slowed yet in Chelan County. The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public minor issues this time of year can become more complicated due to changing weather. Although it is warm during the day it can cool off dramatically at night. If you are enjoying the outdoors, make sure you bring gear to prepare or an unexpected overnight stay. Don’t turn a minor issue into an emergency by not preparing for conditions.
