A 14-day public comment period on the draft plan runs from Feb. 14 through Feb. 28. The draft plan is available for review on the County’s website. Also available is a community survey, which takes about 10 minutes to complete.
“The update to the Community Wildfire Protection Plan comes at a time when our community is experiencing increased wildfires – and an increase in those impacts from wildfires,” said Elle Robinson, senior natural resource specialist with Chelan County Natural Resources. “We are asking for public input because it’s important a plan like this address Chelan County’s specific needs and risks as well as our assets.”
For the past year, the County and Cascadia Conservation District have been working with local stakeholders, including representatives from the county’s fire districts, to update the 2019 plan. The plan outlines the county’s vulnerabilities to wildfire hazards and details various strategies and actions designed to reduce wildfire risk. The plan’s proactive mitigation efforts can help the county become more resilient, protecting lives and property while promoting long-term sustainability, Robinson said.
The webpage also features a project StoryMap that provides in-depth and interactive maps and information on natural hazards within Chelan County, along with a hazard mapper tool that allows users to explore specific risk areas. More details can be found on the links below.
The final plan is expected to be adopted by the Board of County Commissioner in late March.
