It is not necessary to purchase your marriage license from the same county in which you will be married. A marriage license purchased in any Washington county will be valid for ceremonies performed anywhere within Washington State.
Both applicants visit our office and take their place in line. Upon your arrival, we will retrieve your data, gather your signatures, collect the fee, and create your marriage license packet.
Waiting period: Your 3-day waiting period begins once we process your signed application and collect the application fee. A marriage license purchased on a Friday, for example, won’t be valid for use until the following Monday (3 calendar days later). Note that you will leave with all the paperwork you need, as it will be postdated to allow for the waiting period.
A certified copy of the recorded marriage certificate provides you with proof of marriage. They are available from the county that sold your marriage license, and cost $3.00 each.
There are a number of methods for requesting a certified copy:
Visit this Office (if license was purchased from Chelan County): Copy will be produced at the time of transaction. Payable by cash, check, or credit card (processing fee added for credit card)
Mail Request (if license was purchased from Chelan County): Payable by check only. Your order will be mailed to you within two working days of mail receipt.
Internet Order via Digital Archives: Although we do not have a way to accept an order via the county website, you are able to order a certified copy online through the WA State Digital Archives. Your certified copy will arrive in the mail.
Phone Order: Not available through our office. The WA State Department of Health can accept phone orders at 360-236-4313. Statewide marriage records dated 1968 and later, all counties.
